Iwona Malevich  met with IGUMO students

IGUMO keeps fulfilling projects aimed at development of international cultural dialogue. On October 28, there was a meeting of IGUMO students and Iwona Malevich, grandniece of Kazimir Malevich . Today, she is engaged in preservation of his legacy and popularisation of the suprematist’s artworks.

Collaboration between IGUMO representatives and Ms. Malevich started within the special project called Deeper Black Than Square presented at the Days of Contemporary Art (DOCA) 2019 festival. The project brought together artworks of students and artists from different countries.

This year, Iwona Malevich offered the IGUMO team to continue the development of the project and show the influence of Kazimir Malevich as painter, architect, and poet on the world culture. Involvement in addressing this important task is an honour for IGUMO students and employees passionate about art and culture.

Iwona Malevich:

“It is important for me to convey the idea that Kazimir Malevich’s works are not just about Black Square to the widest possible audience. His works influenced the modern architecture. Zaha Hadid called him her guru.

It is also important to tell about poetic heritage of Kazimir Malevich. 10 years ago, I visited Kiev and shared about that but nobody knew about his poems. Aleksandra Shatskikh, an art historian, collected all poetic works of Kazimir Malevich. These poems were extremely important for comprehensive understanding of the suprematist’s ideas and thoughts”.

Few people know that Kazimir Malevich also was a theatre director. In 1913, together with Mikhail Matiushin and Aleksei Kruchonykh, he directed a Futurist opera titled ‘Victory Over the Sun’ and prepared its scene design and costumes.

Deeper Black Than Square project researches all branches of Kazimir Malevich’s creativity. Students of the Faculties of Linguistics, Advertising and PR, Photography, and Design will team up to study all the possible information sources about the suprematist, interpret his ideas and thoughts, and demonstrate different aspects of his talent, thus building a cultural bridge among different countries.

Irina Zaika, Academic Secretary of the Russian Architects Union's Heritage Council, whose activities are linked with architectural monuments under the protection of UNESCO, also presented her speech within the meeting. She heads the Centre of Memory of Kazimir Malevich at Skolkovo and a project titled ‘Malevich's Path’.

Ms. Zaika told IGUMO students that Kazimir Malevich was a member of the Leningrad Union of Soviet Architects, together with his students designed architectural projects of cities in open space and the so-called aerocities hovering over the earth. His artistic works formed the basis of Russian avant-garde architecture.

Olga Baranova, art expert and lecturer of IGUMO, continued the topic of Malevich’s diverse talents in her speech. She told the students that the suprematist’s concept came from objectless configurative painting.

For Kazimir Malevich, the main role in it should be played by the colour, the strongest expression of energy.

The geometry of flat figures helps the artist express the color in the most accurate way. According to Kazimir Malevich, the square is the first shape from which other figures appear. The square for the artist is the creation of the human mind, because this model cannot be found in nature.

The artist’s work has somehow affected the life of each person. This concerns the principles of the organisation of spaces, the creation of forms of many objects, and the usage of popular colour variations. That is why it is important to show the world community different aspects of Malevich's work, convey his thoughts and ideas, and tell about his discoveries. In the near future, experts together with the students of IGUMO will do that.

The administration of IGUMO expresses its gratitude to Irina Zaika, Academic Secretary of the Russian Architects Union's Heritage Council, and Iwona Malevich for the meeting and expresses confidence in the fruitful cooperation in popularisation of Kazimir Malevich’s legacy among young people.
