On November 25, students of the Faculty of Linguistics listened to a special guest. Sukhdev Singh, professor of applied linguistics from Guru Nanak Dev University in India, visited IGUMO to give a lecture on structural functional approach to language learning.
His lecture covered many issues related to structure-meaning interrelation in utterance. Among other problems covered were language as a communicative means, its functions and aspects realized through its different communicative aims.
The first part of the lecture was devoted to numerous aspects of linguistics. It covered such problems as the difference between visual and verbal communication, factors affecting word meaning formation, priority of the meaning, context and function over structure in the given approach, and paradigmatics and syntagmatics of the language units.
During the second part of his lecture professor focused on issues of more specific character. They were properties of context, contextual analysis, language metafunctions and empirical analysis of sentences according to Michael Halliday’s system.
The Faculty of Linguistics thanks professor for his lecture and hopes to see him in IGUMO again.
